Son Of Late Emir,Sanusi Ado Bayero,Explains Why He Left Kano

Ado Bayero said he left not because of illness as alleged by some, but rather because of his concerns about security in the state. "I am not a troublemaker. That was why I left Kano," he stated. "Because if I am in Kano, even if I just step out of my house it can create a lot of problems which can affect the security in the state." he added.

"I don’t want anything that will degenerate to street riot and all that. The peace and security of my people are paramount to me. I left the state intentionally; nobody compelled me to do so and nobody can stop me from returning to Kano. I will return at my own time."

This was also the reason why he did not join his brothers when they paid visit to the new emir on June 14, Ado Bayero said.

He called on the media to avoid reporting that could provoke riots in Kano. "I am a man of peace and that was what our late emir taught us. Throughout his reign, he preached peace in the state, country and across the world. I don’t want crisis no matter how small and please you people should help us to sustain peace in the state. It is the responsibility of you the media to preach peace."

Lamido Sanusi, who previously served as the governor of the Central Bank, was elected emir on June 8. Two other contenders were Ado Bayero, the District Head of Gwale, and Wamban Kano Abbas Sanusi.

Several people were feared dead as pro and anti-Sanusi protesters clashed in city of Kano shortly after the new emir was elected. The police blockaded the palace explaining the move by the need to protect the place from hooligans. Only after the four-day siege was lifted, the new emir was able to enter his official residence.

AMAZING: This is the 2014 World Cup’s most enduring image (PHOTO)

The ongoing FIFA World Cup has attracted controversy since it started with the leaking of nudé photos of some Croatian players and Nigeria’s less than impressive match against Iran.

A bright light shone through the event though as Australian player, Mark Bresciano took time out for an act of kindness as he bent down to help a boy on Crutches tie his shoe laces which had come undone.

The moment was captured before Australia’s match against Chile and has been described by Fox Sports as the World Cup’s “enduring image”

Chile went on to beat Australia 3-1.

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez attend bible study class together

The newly reunited couple appeared ‘smitten’ with one another at the session at City Church in Los Angeles, where they sat quietly with friends and listened to a sermon from Pastor Judah Smith.

A source told Us Weekly: ‘they were very lovey dovey and cute. They sat next to each other and listened to the sermon and were smitten with each other. They came and left together with a few friends.’

And it seems the sessions have been having a positive effect on Justin, following months of controversial antics.

The source added: ‘He looks so happy and at peace.’

The 20-year-old singer won back the ‘Come and Get It star’ – who he has had an on/off romance with since 2010 after vowing to curb his wild ways and even change his friendship group.

A source told The Sun newspaper: ‘He told her he can’t live without her and that he’s reformed his bad boy ways for good. He’s ditched a few of the troublesome characters he’s been hanging out with after advice from his management. And Selena thinks he’s being genuine and given Justin another chance.’

And as a symbol of his new direction, Justin presented Selena with a £6,000 Segway at his Beverly Hills home so they can have ‘good, clean fun’ together.

The source added: ‘it was when she agreed to go to his house that he gave her the new, shiny Segway.’

‘He thought a Segway would be a chance to prove they can have good, clean fun together, and she thought that was a really sweet touch.’

Why EFCC froze Adamawa’s account

The Adamawa State government had on Thursday revealed that the federal government had frozen all the state’s bank accounts.
——————————
The Adamawa State government’s bank account was frozen as a precautionary measure to safeguard the state treasury amidst evidence of looting uncovered in an on- going investigation, sources at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, told PREMIUM TIMES on Friday.

Sources at the Commission claim that there was massive looting of the treasury by top officials of Adamawa State government, a development that led to the arrest and questioning of key officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, the State Commissioner for Finance, former Commissioner for Local Government (now Commissioner for Higher Education), the Accountant General of the State and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Local Government.

The Adamawa State government had on Thursday revealed that the federal government had frozen all the state’s bank accounts.

The move came amidst impeachment moves against Governor Murtala Nyako by the Peoples’ Democratic party, PDP-led members of the state’s House of Assembly.

The state’s lawmakers accused Mr. Nyako and Bala Ngillari, the Deputy Governor, of siphoning funds from the state’s treasury running into billions of Naira.

The EFCC said that its investigation was triggered by petitions alleging massive looting of the treasury by the governor and his cronies through an illegal department called Special Programme and Project Units, SPPU, which engaged in over invoicing and inflation of contract.

“In the course of investigation, a critical analysis of the Joint State/Local Government account reveals massive cash withdrawals,” a source at the commission told PREMIUM TIMES.

According to the source who did not want to be named because it was an ongoing investigation, the Permanent Secretary of Local Governments in the state made cash withdrawals of over N2 billion in 181 different transactions, scattered in tranches of N3 million, N4 million, N8 million and N9 million per transaction from the State/Local Government account domiciled with First Bank between 29th of August 2011 and 2012.

He also made similar cash withdrawals amounting to over N500 million between March 6, 2008, and March 4, 2011, from another Joint account domiciled in Keystone Bank, the source added.
“Other officials of the ministry who allegedly looted the Joint Account include Justina Jari, a Principal Accountant with the ministry who made cash withdrawals to the tune of N600 million from the Joint Account between October, 2009 and February, 2011.

“Another staff of the ministry, Abdulhakeem Mohammed was also alleged to have withdrawn about N3 billion from the account between February 2007 and May 2011. Two other staff, Mercy Wanje and Jumai Salihu were also said to have made withdrawals of N1 billion and N160 million from the account respectively,” the source said.

“On a single day, another staff called Haruna Hamali, a principal store officer made a cash withdrawal of over N70 million from the same account,” he said.

“The withdrawals were made and the money returned to top officials of the state government as narrated and confirmed by the officials who made the withdrawals.

“The state officials were arrested in connection with the withdrawals and other ongoing investigations,” the source added.

Wilson Uwujaren, spokesman of the EFCC, confirmed the freeze order, but declined to make further comments.

Chibok Schoolgirls: Nigerian boarding schools must provide security for students – Jonathan

Presidential Fact Finding Committee on Abducted Female Students in Chibok visited Mr. Jonathan.
—————————-
Despite that Borno State has been under a state of emergency for over a year, President Goodluck Jonathan has virtually blamed the authorities of the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State for failing to provide security thus leading to the kidnap of 276 girls from the school.

The final year teenagers were kidnapped by the Boko Haram from the school dormitory on April 14.
“If we had just five security personnel in the compound that night, although they couldn’t have stood the firepower of the invaders, they could have alerted the girls and they wouldn’t have been deceived,” Mr. Jonathan said in Abuja while receiving the report of the Presidential Fact Finding Committee on Abducted Female Students in Chibok, Borno.

Mr. Jonathan said if the school had provided security for the students, “most of them (the girls) would have been able to escape and probably the number taken would not have been up to 30.”

“But because there was no security at all, there was nobody to even warn the girls that there was danger’’, he said.

The President, therefore, urged school operators, especially those in the north east of the country, to provide basic security for their boarding students.

He said henceforth, school owners, especially in the north east, who want to keep their students in boarding houses, must be ready to make basic security provisions for their safety.

“Let me charge everybody, whether corporate bodies, federal and state governments or individuals that own schools especially in the north east, that if we must keep students in hostels, there must be some basic security that should be provided,” he said.

“On the issue of Chibok, even if we had five police officers guarding that school that night when the invaders came in, they couldn’t have been able to deceive those girls.

“The story was that they came in military camouflage and deceived the girls that they were soldiers, who came to take them on protective custody because Boko Haram was invading the community, and they followed.

“While I am not expecting school owners to put an army battalion on guard, at least basic security arrangement should be made to protect their students,” he added.

The president’s statement comes weeks after the West African Examination Council, WAEC, said it warned the Borno State government of the dangers of holding the final Year SSCE examination in Chibok.

WAEC said it only agreed to hold the examination in the school when the state government assured it of adequate security. The state government never denied the examination authority’s claim.

Analysts, however, questioned WAEC’s rational of asking a state government, whose state is under a state of emergency, and who, even before the emergency rule, had no control over security agencies, to provide security for students.

The abduction of the Chibok students and the continuous killings by the Boko Haram in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa has made several people including the state government question the state of emergency.

The federal government has however defended it saying security officials need it to be effective in tackling the insurgents.

On Friday, Mr. Jonathan also disclosed that his administration would not limit its anti-terrorism efforts to military intervention only as it was currently looking at economic issues to improve people’s welfare.

He said in addition to government’s Almajiri school programme, his administration was strongly supporting the Safe Schools Initiative to keep children in troubled states in school.

The President said Victim Support Fund would soon be floated to cater for those affected by the insurgency, including orphaned children and those whose businesses had been destroyed.

He promised that the Federal Government would rebuild the Chibok school using army engineers.
“All buildings there will be demolished and rebuilt. That will start after the children are rescued.

“On completion, the federal government will not manage the school because it is a state school. We will hand it over to the state government to manage’’, he added.

He assured the committee members that the security council would study their report and take the necessary steps.

The Chairman of the committee, Ibrahim Sabo, said the report addressed a number of issues that were incidental to the committee’s terms of reference.

He listed the issues to include matters dealing with insurgency in general and the military/political responses vital to overcoming the current security challenge.

Mr. Sabo said the committee met with four of the girls who regained freedom and their families.
The chairman, however, advised that the report should be treated with utmost confidentiality in order not to jeopardise the ongoing rescue efforts or compromise national security.

This, he said, does not preclude government from releasing information that may be useful for a better public understanding of issues surrounding the abduction saga.

Mr. Jonathan inaugurated the committee on May 6 to provide government with accurate information about the incident.

Its six terms of reference included liaising with the Borno Government and establishing the circumstances leading to the school remaining opened for boarding students when other schools were closed.

It was also mandated to liaise with relevant authorities and the parents of the missing girls to establish the actual number and identities of those abducted, among others.

Ekiti 2014: Jonathan should call his “dogs of war to order” – APC

The APC National Chairman accused the PDP of using aircrafts to ferry money into Ekiti State for the election.

The new National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure that Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Ekiti State do not degenerate into a crisis.

John Oyegun, at a press conference in Lagos, Friday, said that the final days of electioneering campaign in Ekiti provided an avenue for the federal government to “bare its fangs” with a series of unconstitutional acts.

“We urge President Goodluck Jonathan to live up to his pledge, made several times over, that he would always ensure that elections held under his watch are free and fair, and that his ambition is not worth the life of any Nigerian,” Mr. Oyegun said.

“The President should call his dogs of war to order before their precipitate a serious crisis in Ekiti,” he added.

The APC had accused the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, -led federal government of preventing its state governors from participating in the final electioneering campaigns of Kayode Fayemi, the Ekiti State Governor.

Mr. Oyegun said that the party’s governors were not only prevented from attending the rally, the helicopter that was to ferry Adams Oshiomhole, the Edo State governor, from Benin to Akure was denied permission to take off by the aviation authorities apparently acting on “orders from above.”

“Then while the plane bearing Gov. Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, who is also the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, was allowed to and at the Akure Airport, his convoy was stopped by soldiers at the border of Ondo and Ekiti state, and ordered to return to Akure by the leader of the troops, an army captain who said he was under orders not to allow him into Ado Ekiti and threatened to shoot him if he defied his orders.

“Gov. Amaechi was detained along the road in the bush for as long as it suited the soldiers before he was forced to return to Akure. While the Governor was being detained on the road, the convoys of theMinister of Police Affairs and the Minister of State for Defence sped past and were not stopped by the troops,” Mr. Oyegun continued.

“But the worst was yet to come. On arrival in Akure Airport, he found out that the airport has been shut, leaving him stranded. By the time other Governors, including Rochas Okorocha of Imo State and Ibikunle Amosun of Rivers, and party leaders including myself, Chief Bisi Akande and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived at the Akure Airport for their onward journey to their various destinations, they discovered that the airport has been shut, apparently on the same nebulous ‘orders from above’.

“Thus, all the party leaders and supporters who came to the rally from across the country, including Sokoto, Abuja, Kano, Owerri, Port Harcourt and Lagos, were forced to travel by road back to their destinations, with the dangers inherent in such night journey,” he added.

The APC National Chairman also accused the PDP of using aircraft to ferry money into Ekiti State for the election.

“Within the past three days, two aircraft, one a Beechcraft 1900 and another a Hawker 900, made a total of three trips to the Akure airport ferrying cargoes of money for the Ekiti election,” Mr. Oyegun said.

“When one of these cargoes burst open, naira notes with wrappers bearing the name of a popular bank spilled out. The offloading of these cargoes, which were then loaded into bullion vans heading forAdo-Ekiti, was supervised by Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro, as widely reported in the media and yet unrefuted.

“Placed against the background of a statement credited to a PDP leader that huge amounts of money have been made available by the FG for the Ekiti election, this raises huge concerns,” he added.

Nigeria Customs says suspected military kit smuggler now with DMI

The suspect was arrested by the Customs on Monday and handed over to the SSS on Wednesday.

The Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, says the suspect who was caught attempting to smuggle military camouflage and boots among other goods into country has now been handed over to the Directorate of Military Intelligence, DMI.

The Custom Area Controller, Port and Terminal MultiService Limited Command, Folorunsho Adegoke, made this known to journalists on Friday in Lagos.

Mr. Adegoke said the NCS handed over the suspect to the DMI when the State Security Service, SSS, which had earlier taken custody the suspect on Wednesday, returned him to the command.

The suspect was arrested by the Customs on Monday and handed over to the SSS on Wednesday.
Mr. Adegoke said the SSS returned the suspect on Friday and urged the command to hand him over to the DMI for further investigation.

He said that the SSS officials told the command that the DMI was in a better position to investigate the case.

Items found with the suspect include military uniforms, bullet proof jackets, boots, ear protectors, hand gloves, chemical protectors and helmets.

Others are jack knives, belts, water bottles, weapon service equipment, face masks, communication radio gadgets, and raincoats.

Ekiti 2014: APC crying wolf – Presidency

Mr. Jonathan’s spokesperson, Reuben Abati, in a statement on Thursday said the allegation by the APC National Chairman, John Oyegun, was inaccurate.

The Presidency on Friday said it was not true that the Goodluck Jonathan administration was repressing the opposition in the build-up to the Ekiti governorship election.

Mr. Jonathan’s spokesperson, Reuben Abati, in a statement on Thursday said the allegation by the APC National Chairman, John Oyegun, was like crying “wolf where there is none.”

“It is absolutely wrong to accuse this administration of repression,” Mr. Abati said. “If anything, this administration has been most tolerant of opposition and most respectful of everybody’s right of association. This accusation cannot stand at all.”

Mr. Oyegun and the APC had earlier accused the federal government of using security agencies to frustrate its activities including barring its governors from entering Ekiti to campaign for Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Mr. Abati, however, said “the Jonathan administration remains committed to democracy and its principles.”

“Where elections are concerned, it is a matter of public record that President Jonathan is committed to free and fair elections and the integrity of elections. This is in fact one of the major areas of achievements of his administration.

“In Ekiti election and any other election at all, the government is committed to one man, one vote; one woman, one vote; and one youth, one vote which is President Jonathan’s concept.

“At the same time, the security agencies have an obligation to ensure that people who, with their choices, would rather compromise the integrity of the process are not allowed to do so.

“Rather than cry wolf where there is none, it is the APC and its leaders that should embark on soul searching,” he added.

Australia lists Boko Haram as terror group

Australia has formally listed Boko Haram as a terrorist organization.

The move makes it illegal to fund, train with, recruit for or become a member of the group which is keeping over 200 abducted schoolgirls for the third month running.

Australia has joined with the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Nigeria in their decision to list the group as a terror organization.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced plans to list Boko Haram last month, saying the world was transfixed and horrified by the group’s hostage taking.

They are also responsible for the deaths of another 300 people in recent bombings.

People found to be associated with the group could face up to 25 years in jail.

APC Lied To Nigerians About Kano Governor’s Air Travel

It has been revealed that the All Progressives Congress, APC, lied about federal officials preventing the plane carrying the Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, from landing in Akure.

After investigation by PREMIUM TIMES, it was discovered that at the time the APC was claiming Kwankwaso was being barred from getting to Ekiti, he was in Kano and was said to have no plans of travelling to Ekiti.

The APC, had in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, claimed Mr. Kwankwaso and two other APC governors, Adams Oshiomhole of Edo and Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers, were barred from getting to Ekiti to support Governor Kayode Fayemi’s re-election bid.

However, when the spokesperson of the governor was contacted he had said his boss was in Kano and had no plans to travel to Ekiti.

"The governor is in Kano here, he did not have plans of going to Akure, none that I know of," Mr. Dantiye said.

On realising that his party had released a statement to the contrary, Mr. Dantiye called back to say he was at an event with the governor and would not “want to confirm or deny” the APC’s claim.

It was gathered by PREMIUM TIMES that the event the Kano governor attended in Kano on Thursday was the graduation of 1120 mechanics and vulcanisers from the 44 local governments of the state and his supporters posted pictures of the event on Facebook.

Though the party lied about Kwankwaso, their claims about Gov. Amaechi being prevented from getting to Ekiti is true.

The spokesperson to Gov. Oshiomhole also revealed that, the governor's aircraft was barred from leaving Benin airport.

Meanwhile when the spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, Olajide Laleye was contacted on why they detained Amaechi, he denied the incident.

Reports surfaced online that Gov. Amaechi's plane had been impounded on his arrival in Akure and he was held hostage for over an hour by security operatives in Odudu, Ondo state, but he was later released.

Atiku Warns PDP-Led Federal Governemt Against Impunity

The former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar on Thursday, reacted to the grounding of the All Progressive Congress (APC), governors planes from taking off from their various federal government owned state airports.

The former vice president, who made this known in a statement issued in Abuja from his media office said, the decision was part of measures to stop the APC governors from attending the campaign rally for their Ekiti State counterpart, Kayode Fayemi.

The Turaki Adamawa, who warned the federal government against impunity stated that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP led administration under President Goodluck Jonathan is turning the country into a police state following the restrictions placed on the way of the governors and party members.

Atiku pointed out that the action of the PDP-led federal government in stopping the governors of Kano, Rivers and Edo from attending the APC governorship campaign rally in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, was in a Gestapo-like manner which is capable of turning Nigeria into a Banana Republic where fundamental rights of citizens are trampled upon with impunity.

He said it was very surprising to see the way the federal government has been dragging the military and police into politics.

"The government must stop instigating state security agents paid from tax payers money against helpless, and law abiding Nigerians" Atiku said. "Our gallant military men should remain focused on securing and protecting the territorial integrity of our great nation, especially in this time of terror attacks and insurgency across the country."

Atiku, who made a promise at the party's national convention that he would lead the movement to oust the present administration which he described as inept and incompetent.

The former vice president further asserted that the present administration has failed Nigerians, and reminded the populace that "a government that deprives its citizens from access to jobs and education as manifested by the on-going closure of some tertiary institutions, such as polytechnics, to be shut for nearly a year, has alienated itself from the masses and will definitely suffer the repercussion at the polls, use of force or not."

Atiku also reiterated that the APC remains the only viable alternative to the PDP-led government, saying: "is a prescription for socio-political peace, progress, equity, security, unity and national development."

Obanikoro Refutes APC's Allegations

Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, the Minister of State for Defence, on Thursday blasted the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the allegation made against him.

It would be recalled that the APC had earlier accused the minister of moving some ballot papers to Akure, Ondo State capital ahead Saturday's governorship election in Ekiti State.

Speaking in Abuja at the official commencement ceremony of the Barracks Health Committee, an Armed Forces Programme on AIDS Control (AFPAC), a partnership between the Ministry of Defence and the United State Department of Defence, Obanikoro stated that he doesn't owe the APC any explanation neither did he need to seek its permission to move around the country.

“I am the Minister of State for Defence, and not in charge of electoral matters for goodness sake. Sometimes I think we take our politics too far. For anybody to make such a reckless allegation against my person, I think it is politics carried too far" Obanikoro said.

“As you can see, I am here today performing my official responsibility. If I have anything to do outside Abuja, I don’t need the permission of the APC to move around the country. I am a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and my focus is how to deliver the president’s agenda and not to play politics with everything. I go to wherever, on Monday I will be in Kaduna, if there is an election in Kaduna, will APC tell me not to go there and perform my responsibility. I don’t owe anyone explanation for my presence in any part of the country.

“Leaders who are shortsighted play politics with everything, leaders like us, we are not in this for personal reasons, we are in this because we believe we can serve the people and our focus is more on the future than on today,” the minister stated" he added.

The minister, who went ahead to explain the even of the day said, the inauguration was a part of the programmes aimed at flushing out HIV/AIDS from the country, as well as to educate Nigerians on the need to take ownership of the programme. He said it was his love for grassroots methods of fixing issues that made him attend the event, noting that the military's efforts towards the programme has also helped in reducing HIV/AIDS infection.

“We are on the right track they just need to be encouraged, I have seen commitment on their part and all we can do at the leadership level is to ensure that the necessary support is given to ensure continuity” he said.

Col. Nurudeen Hussain, who gave the overview of the Barracks Health Committee Project, said it was aimed at stemming the tide of HIV epidemic and mitigate its impact on personnel. He said that the Ministry of Defence established the AFPAC in 1993 with the aim of developing and implementing sustainable prevention strategies with the military.

According to him, the prevalence of HIV in the military has reduced with 2.5 per cent compared to 4.1 per cent of national average as contained in the 2010 report of Integrated Biological and Behavioural Surveillance (IBBS). He listed the 11 pilot barracks of the programme to include Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja, Comilla Barracks, Kaduna, Abakpa Cantonment, Enugu, Joe Akahan Barracks, Makurdi, Eburutu Barracks, Calabar, among others.

Air Chief Marshall Alex Badeh, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), who was represented by the Director of Medicals, Rear Admiral Sam Epelle, said sound health of troops as well as their families was important for successful execution of military operations.

Badeh added that with the current security challenge in the country, it was very important for soldiers to be medically fit in order for them to be able protect the country.

Rochas Okorocha Asks Goodluck Jonathan To Save Nyako From Impeachment

The top official has appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan asking him to save Adamawa State governor Murtala Nyako from impeachment.

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governors’ Forum and Imo governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha made the request following the yesterday's breaking news saying that Adamawa House of Assembly served the impeachment notices to Nyako and his deputy.

Okorocha urged the House of Assembly to drop the motion also asking the Presidency to intervene in the matter, The Paradigm reports.

The official explained that in the course of current security challenges Nigeria faces it was inappropriate for anybody to touch upon the impeachment issue. Forum Chairman stressed the fact that such a move could lead to even more tension in Adamawa and urged the state stakeholders to prevent such a situation for the sake of peace in the country.

Instead he advised the politicians and lawmakers to throw the effort currently spent on impeachment proceedings on the more important issue, which is the rescue of abducted Chibok girls.

Okorocha said it would be surprising for the world to know that amid the security problems Nigeria is discussing the impeachment.

Amaechi's Impeachment: List Of Governor's Sins

The anti-Rotimi Amaechi lawmakers, led by Mr. Evans Bipi have listed the offences allegedly committed by the governor  that makes him impeachable.

The six anti-Amaechi lawmakers which is made up of their leader Bipi, Michael Okechukwu Chinda, Kelechi Godspower Nwogu, Martins Amaewhule, Victor Ihunwo and Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani have vowed that the governor will be impeached when the time is right.

Speaking with The PUNCH in a telephone interview on Thursday, Mr Bipi said though they have the intention to impeach Amaechi the governor of Rivers state, they have no plans of doing such now, even though he is guilty of so many impeachable offences.

Listing Amaechi's impeachable offences, he said Amaechi’s interference in the affairs of the state judiciary and meeting with other members of the House of Assembly at the Port Harcourt Government House were impeachable offences that would count against the governor.

According to Bipi, meeting with lawmakers in Government House is an impeachable offence because that is not the hallowed chamber.

He also listed the alleged poor handling of the monorail project and purported seizure of the allowances of six lawmakers perceived to be against his (Amaechi) administration.

He said, “But why is Amaechi afraid of impeachment? If he has not committed any impeachable offence, why is he afraid?

"We will impeach him when the time comes. But for now, we have no plan to impeach the governor. But he knows that he has committed a lot of impeachable offences."

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr. Otelemaba Dan-Amachree, said Amaechi was not under any threat of impeachment and maintained that the governor had not committed any impeachable offence.

Reports surfaced online this morning that there was a fresh plot being arranged by a serving minister from the state, to persuade 6 House of Assembly members, the representatives of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to impeach the Rivers state governor, Amaechi.

I predicted Kefee's Death - Ara

Nigeria's renowned talking drummer Ara disclosed that she told Keffe about her death..According to Vanguard, she said

“I want to use this forum to appeal to my colleagues in the music industry. Less than two years ago, I had a dream about Keffee and immediately called her and narrated it to her, I also appealed to her not to make a joke of it….the rest is history.

Early this year, I had a dream and contacted Efe of NOW music as he’s the only one I could call and told him to please organise a forum for all musicians to assemble and pray against death amongst us (please confirm from Efe). It’s sad we had to lose my girlfriend, sister and

colleague…so sad. When a revelation comes like that, it means there is a way out. Once again, we need to come together as a body under one roof to rebuke and pray about this revelation I had early this year. Yes, we all have different sources of prayer but this is a prayer we all must observe together. I beg you all. I didn’t want to speak out but I have no choice than to”

Armed Robbers Storm Church, Cart Away Valuables

Armed robbers, in the early hours of yesterday stormed the Christ the King Pentecostal
Church, along Ezenei Avenue in Asaba, Delta State during a prayer vigil, carting away with church instruments and the sum of N150, 000 cash.

According to eye-witnesses, the hoodlums numbering over eight, armed with AK47 and other dangerous weapons, drove into the area in a Hilux van with no registration number, disguised as worshipers, in order to gain the attention of the prayer warriors.

Some members of the church who spoke to Leadership revealed that the stolen money was part of donations made during the service last Sunday, in order to speed-up completion of the church building.

Over the past few months there have been reports of these dare devil armed robbers turning Churches to their new target for their robbery operations.

In March it was reported that no fewer than 15 armed robbers invaded the Christ Apostolic Church in Alagbado, Lagos State, carting away with about 40 phones and money estimated at N2m.

A similar incident occurred few weeks after the Lagos robbery as six armed robbers invaded the Vine Branch church in Ibadan in an attempt to steal the Sunday service offering.

“Aare gave everything he had for the benefit of the people’’, the governor added.

Mr. Ajimobi said it was the good works done by the late business mogul that motivated his government into declaring seven days of mourning and a public holiday for him.
He said such a feat was unprecedented in the history of the state.

The remains of Mr. Arisekola were laid to rest at 11.15 a.m. in his Oluwokekere residence in Bashorun, Ibadan.

Uganda vows to implement gay law despite new U.S. sanctions

The United States imposed sanctions on Uganda Thursday over the East African nation’s anti-gay law, which can see homosexuals jailed for life.

The U.S. government said it was cancelling a military exercise and cutting funds to a number of programmes it is running with the Ugandan authorities.

Tougher measures will also follow.

“The Department of State is taking measures to prevent entry into the United States by certain Ugandan officials involved in serious human rights abuses, including against LGBT individuals,” said National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden Hayden in a written statement.”

The US will also discontinue or redirect funds for certain programmes involving the Ugandan Police Force, National Public Health Institute and Ministry of Health, and has cancelled plans to conduct a US military-sponsored aviation exercise.

The White House said the Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act is “counter to universal human rights”.
A spokesperson for the Ugandan government, Ofwono Opondo, dismissed the sanctions.

Mr. Opondo said the contentious law will be implemented except it is amended or nullified by court following a petition in Uganda’s constitutional court by a group of gay rights activist, the country’s Daily Monitor reported Friday.

“These measures by the US government do not diminish our resolve to obtain and exercise full sovereignty. Mr Obama has more on his plate [with the war] in Syria and Iraq, and could be diverting domestic attention for a while,” he was quoted as saying.

The United States provides about $740 million to Uganda annually in development assistance, with much of the money going to agriculture and health- mostly for supply of anti-retroviral drugs.

Mr. Opondo said the new sanctions will be inconsequential as the U.S. had already withdrawn much of its direct support to the government preferring to channel its assistance through non-governmental organisations.

The U.S. threatened punishment over the legislation since it was signed into law in February by President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda.

Nigeria should negotiate with Boko Haram – NBA President

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Okey Wali, on Thursday urged the Federal Government to engage Boko Haram insurgents in dialogue to achieve meaningful peace and progress in Nigeria.

Mr. Wali said this in Abuja during a valedictory session of the Supreme Court in honour of the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.

He said that there was need to engage the insurgents to facilitate truth and reconciliation that would stop the intransigence of the group, leading to the much desired peace.

“Like they say, issues are better discussed unresolved than resolved un-discussed; too many issues are begging to be addressed and we keep shutting our eyes to the obvious. This is why the NBA has continued to advise that the President engages the insurgents and never let-off because of the intransigence of the insurgents.

That way, we will most probably get to the bottom of the matter,” Mr. Wali, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, said.

He observed that there existed three Boko Harams – the political Boko Haram, the religious Boko Haram and the criminal Boko Haram.

Mr. Wali said that government needed to find out by engaging the insurgents, what was their ideology and who were the proponents of the ideology.

Citing global instances of how such engagement worked, Mr. Wali said that the Obama administration in the U.S. exchanged five Guantanamo Bay detainees for one American Sergeant.
He said that it took the 1998 Good Friday Agreement which was brokered by then British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, to resolve the Ireland Revolution Army, IRA, insurgency in the U.K.

Mr. Wali said that notwithstanding some sentiments against it, engaging the insurgents was a sensible option.

The NBA president said that this was desirable, especially in the efforts to rescue the kidnapped Chibok girls.

“Everyday, the Chibok girls and other victims are away from their families and are somewhere nobody knows, that is hellish for the girls and their families,” he said.

Lagos deportation: Court adjourns suit filed by Igbo deportees

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday adjourned to October 15 hearing in a suit filed by seven Igbo deportees challenging an alleged breach of their fundamental rights.

The plaintiffs – Joseph Aniebonam, Osondu Mbuto, Osondu Agwu, Nnenna Ogbonna, Emily Okoroariri, Friday Ndukwe and Onyeka Ugwu – are suing the Lagos State Government on behalf of 76 others for infringing on their fundamental rights.

The plaintiffs filed the suit through their lawyer, Ugo Ugwunnadi.

The Attorney-General of Lagos State and the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State were joined as respondents in the suit.

The case could not be heard at the resumed date due to a notice of preliminary objection filed by the Attorney-General of Lagos State.

The objection was dated June 17 and served on counsel to the plaintiffs in court.

Since the application was not yet ripe for hearing, Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia fixed October 15 for mention.

The judge also ordered hearing notices to be issued to the police before the next adjourned date.
In their motion, the applicants wanted the court to declare that they, as Nigerian citizens, were entitled to their fundamental rights as enshrined in the constitution.

They sought a declaration that their arrest and detention in various camps in Lagos in July 2013, and their subsequent deportation to Anambra on July 24, 2013, for no offence, amounted to a serious breach of their rights.

The deportees also sought an order mandating the respondents to tender a written apology to them by publishing same in three national newspapers continuously for 30 days for gross violation of their constitutional rights.

They asked for an order directing the Lagos State Government to re-integrate them into the state as well as a perpetual injunction restraining the respondents, their agents, and officers from further deporting or refusing them free entry into Lagos.

In addition, the applicants claimed the sum of N1 billion against the respondents jointly and severally as general damages for a breach of their rights.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government in its counter-affidavit contended that the deportation was not borne out of malice, but out of genuine intention to re-unite the applicants with their families.

It further averred that the applicants were only assisted by the government to re-join their families after pleading that they had no homes, relatives or businesses in Lagos State.

Why baby making factories are on increase in Nigeria – NAPTIP

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other Related Matters, NAPTIP, has attributed the proliferation of baby making factories to a lapse in the child adoption process.

The Head, Media and Communication of NAPTIP, Arinze Orakwue, said on Friday in Abuja, that stigmatisation by the society encouraged the increasing rise of baby making factories in the country.
He also expressed regret that the child adoption process had been hijacked by criminals, a situation, which, he said, had led to the prevalence of criminal activity in the society.

“What is happening is a criminalisation of the adoption process; some criminals have infiltrated the adoption programme. So, what has happened is that these people go on and set up homes – things that ordinarily institutions are allowed to deal with – and they go outside of the homes to do illegalities. Now what has also fast tracked it? We are a pretentious society.

“You have people needing children to adopt that do not want to make it public. Then you have a society that throws children who by reasons of misadventure have become pregnant. Then, you now have criminals who have pretentiously provided shelter and cover for these children to come and drop.

“So, when these three things meet that is when you have the issue we are talking about. Inadvertently you are producing merchandise for these individuals to deal with. But the funny thing is that they have taken a step further by picking up children, make them pregnant and they become baby making factories for these criminals to sell,” he explained.

He, however, said that the agency had all necessary steps to end the “scourge.”

He disclosed that the law setting up the agency was being amended to deal with the issue of sale of babies, adding that the law had been approved by the senate but was still awaiting adoption.

“Part of what is being incorporated is that some aspect of it as it affects the sale of babies – that is, exploitation of the offspring of another – will be captured in the amendment. So that those who exploit persons because they are teenagers, pregnant, out of wedlock – or their parents have thrown them out of the homes because of teenage pregnancy or what our society calls unwanted pregnancy – will be protected and it’s not an excuse to take away their babies and to sell them.

“Children have a right not to be sold, it is against their law. So, sale of babies is not permitted; the sale of any human being. That is the position,” Mr. Orakwue said.

According to Mr. Orakwue, NAPTIP is working closely with relevant agencies such as the police and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs to find the perpetrators of “this hideous crime.”

He advised Nigerians, especially parents, to ensure that they provide adequate protection for their children to prevent them from becoming victims.

“It is the responsibility of parents to protect the child from the advances of people, who might pick them, abuse them, and exploit them to their own gain.

“You cannot sell a human being; there are procedures for giving up a child for adoption, which must be duly followed,” he said.

He listed Imo, Abia, Enugu, Port-Harcourt, Edo, Ondo, and Osun as states with the presence of homes for baby making.

Presidential committee on Chibok schoolgirls submits report

The committee confirmed that 219 girl remain with their abductors.
—————————————–
The Chairperson of the Presidential Fact Finding Committee on the abducted Chibok girl, Ibrahim Sabo, has revealed that a total of 219 girls are still missing.

Mr. Sabo, a retired brigadier general, disclosed this at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, while presenting the report of the committee to President Goodluck Jonathan.

Mr. Sabo, who disclosed that a total of 276 girls were abducted by members of the Boko Haram Sect, said 57 of the girls escaped while 219 were still unaccounted for.

President Jonathan had set up the fact finding committee on May 2 to gather information surrounding the abduction and to ascertain the exact number of students abducted amongst other terms of references.

“Mr. President, the committee here wishes to lay to rest any residual doubt whether or not any student was abducted at Chibok,” he said. “As most Nigerians already know, there were some persons who doubted whether in fact any student was abducted from Government Secondary School, Chibok.

On the other hand, for those who believed that there was an abduction, there were lingering doubts as to how such a number of kidnap victims were conveyed, considering also that information was sparse as to how the raiding insurgents evacuated the victims.”

“During the siege on the school, 119 students escaped from the school premises, before the insurgents took away their classmates.

“A total of 276 students were thus abducted. As of today, 57 of the abducted students have been reunited with their families after escaping along zig-zag transport route taken by the insurgents or by bolting to safety when the insurgents laid for a rest. Sadly 219 students remain unaccounted for,” he said.

Mr. Sabo also revealed that in the committee’s interactions with four of the girls who regained their freedom and their families, the girls were hesitant to discuss the full details of their experience, citing the fear of possible reprisals from Boko Haram elements.

He noted, however, that the committee received the full cooperation of the people and interacted with different stakeholders considered relevant to the fact finding mandate but with an exception.

“The singular exception was a senator from Borno, who after agreeing to an appointment with the Committee, turned around to avoid the meeting on the excuse that he had another appointment and would thereafter be unavailable for one month or so.

“Not that his non-appearance has materially or in any way affected the outcome of the committee’s findings, but the senator’s avoidance of an interface with the committee may well speak to a motive not too difficult to discern,” he said.

The chairman also noted that though Nigerians and the rest of the world have been galvanised to drum up support for the freedom of the Chibok schoolgirls, little could be achieved through finger-pointing.

“Getting the girls out and safely, too, is by far more important than the publicity generated by the blame game that has tended to becloud the issue,” he said.

He said that the committee had begun the process of mobilising the communities, but it was still an unfinished business. He said to achieve a more worthwhile outcome, more time and a more compact team would be required.

The committee also advised that in order not to jeopardise the on-going rescue efforts and also the possibility of compromising national security matters, the report should be treated with utmost confidentiality.

Mr. Sabo noted that this, however, did not preclude government from releasing information that may be useful for a better public understanding of issues surrounding the abduction saga.

In response, the President, who promised that the report would not be shelved, also urged owners of boarding schools in the country, especially those in the North East, to provide at least some basic security for their students.

He noted that the insurgents were able to operate unhindered because there was no security arrangement at the Government Girls Secondary School, GGSS, where the girls were kidnapped on April 14.

“Let me charge everybody, whether corporate bodies, federal and state governments or individuals that own especially in the north east, that if we must keep students in hostels there must be some basic security that should be provided,” he said.

Boko Haram: Ihejirika warns against ‘inflammatory’ comments

Former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General, Azubuike Ihejirika, on Friday warned against inflammatory statements from northerners over the recent arrest of 486 alleged Boko Haram suspects in Abia State.

Ihejirika spoke at a public presentation of the biography of the 17th Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Mohammed Dikko Umar, in Abuja.

The book entitled: “The Pursuit of Providence” was written by the Abuja Bureau Chief of the Guardian Newspapers, Mr. Madu Onourah.

Ihejirika said rather than speaking in a manner that portrays the country as divided, northern elders should assist the military to identify the insurgents among those arrested by the military.

He said: “Referring to the contemporary situation, currently, we have some people of northern extraction arrested somewhere in my state by the military and other security agencies.

“Let us not forget that not too long ago, we spoke in one voice that we are going to join hands to rid the nation of the menace of terrorism.

“One good way of doing this is for people from that same extraction to avail their services to the military and they will definitely help the military in sorting out the chaff from the wheat rather than speaking in a manner that tends to create the impression that this country is divided.

“The truth is that ordinarily you do not choose who to buy pepper from. If you want to eat in a restaurant you do not ask is the owner a Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa…you just buy.

“If a man is good he is good, irrespective of where he is coming from. I think all we need in this country is development and progress.”

APC condemns planned impeachment of Adamawa governor

The Adamawa State chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP-led Assembly of acting out the party’s script by serving impeachment notices on the state Governor, Murtala Nyako, and his deputy, Bala Ngilari.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday in Yola, the Publicity Secretary of the APC, Phineas Padio, said the Assembly’s action left no one in doubt of the Speaker, Ahmadu Fintiri’s blind ambition to become governor of the state.

Mr. Padio said the allegations against the Governor were not only laughable but embarrassing coming from lawmakers.

“There is no way a house will bring something that happened in 2007, during previous legislations, as some of its allegation against the Governor. It goofed,” Mr. Padio said.

He pointed out that the Speaker, who had been nursing a gubernatorial ambition on the platform of the APC, became angry with the party when Binta Masi from the same zone as him emerged the state chairperson, blocking his chances.

Mr. Padio, who commended groups and individuals for showing solidarity with the state APC led government over the matter, urged the people of Adamawa to resist the lawmakers attempt to scarify the state based on selfish ambitions.

Lawmakers flee Yola
Meanwhile, PREMIUM TIMES gathered some members of the Adamawa State House of Assembly on Wednesday fled Yola for Abuja following their sitting where they ordered the clerk of the House to serve the state governor and his deputy impeachment notices.

Nine members of the Assembly have reportedly denied putting their signature on the impeachment notice.

It was gathered that the lawmakers ran away from the state for fear of being lynched by protesters in Yola who condemned their action.

The state Commissioner of Police, John Abakasanga, in a statement by the command spokesperson DSP, Othman Abubakar, warned “desperate politicians” trying to set the state ablaze for personal reasons.

He said that the state police command was ready to deal with any ugly situation and advised members of the public to go about their normal business without fear.

Contractor threatens to sue Assembly
One of the contractors mentioned in the notice of impeachment sent to Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State by the State House Of Assembly on Wednesday, Hydro Source Resources Limited,
gave the Assembly seven days to apologise to the company or it would be forced to seek redress in the law court.

Addressing a press conference at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, press centre, M. A. Bello, counsel to the contractor,  said, “Paragraph six of the allegations stated that Hydro Source was given N300 million to move to site.”

He stressed that the company was at no point in time given such money. He noted that his client was a major contractor to the Adamawa State government and that the state awarded contracts for the construction roads within the state to the tune of N1.1billion including the Mubi bye pass road that is in contention.

Mr. Bello said that the state government had only paid N600 million.

He lamented that the inclusion of his client on the alleged corrupt deal of the state governor had brought embarrassment to the chairman of the company, Maiwada Baba. He urged the members to verify issues brought before them rather than rush to make statements that could cause disunity and lead to the breakdown of law and order in the state particularly in this trying times.

Nigeria to revoke dormant coal mining licenses

The Federal Government has declared that in the next one month, it will revoke all dormant coal mining licenses of companies yet to commence operations years after the licences were issued.

Briefing journalists after the second meeting of the National Council on Privatization, NCP, which was chaired by Vice President Namadi Sambo, at the Presidential Villa, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Musa Sada, said this was following a direct order given by the Vice President that all dormant mining titles be revoked to allow government reallocate them to serious miners who are willing to support the federal government’s coal to power projects.

Mr. Sada, who briefed alongside the Minister of Power, Chinedu Nebo, and the Director General of the Bureau for Public Enterprises, BPE, Benjamin Dikki, also noted that coal development for the power sector was at the heart of President Goodluck Jonathan’s transformation agenda.

He said it was worrisome that years after the 15 licenses were issued, the companies were yet to commence actual mining of coal. He added that government was bent on using coal to boost its current coal to power Programme.

“For obvious reasons, we need this mineral resource to produce power to leverage on what we have to get what we want.

“We have already started the process to release from any encumbrance, those titles that are being held by people.

“We are not willing to allow it to remain on speculative basis. People that have these titles must have to operate them or lose them in line with the provision of the Minerals Mining Act,” he said.

He said the affected licences included the coal blocks that belonged to the government coal corporation and were sold to companies who ought to have been in the full coal production.

“So, we are looking at the agreement they signed with the BPE,” he said. “We are looking at the Mineral Act and we are putting the two together and we have already started interfacing with them and we are making some progress on that.”

Mr. Sada said the Vice President also directed all relevant agencies of government to ensure that the legal impasse in Ajaokuta Steel Company is settled amicably and to ensure that all agitations engulfing the Company are put to rest.

He further disclosed that government is at the verge of signing agreements with serious investors.
“We looked at the potentials around it and presently government is on the verge of signing agreements with some serious steel producing companies who are interested in taking it forward.

“Part of the discussion is that when we finally come to privatize Ajaokuta, we make sure that we privatize a company that is alive and make sure that the mistakes of the past are not repeated and that the facility being privatized really works,” he said.

Mr. Sada also said the federal government was also looking into pending labour issues , including the emolument for workers.

“The Vice President has given a clear cut directive that the Minister of Finance who is also the Chairperson of the Finance Committee of the NCP should look at the issues of labour critically with the view to giving immediate attention to all the outstanding  labour  issues especially as it relates to the issue of welfare in all the privatized steel companies”.

The Sole Administrator of the Ajaokuta Steel Company, Joseph Onobere, also said Ajaokuta complex which has a current asset value of $5 billion, has been over 98 per cent ready since 1994. He added that monthly, N300 million is spent on salaries of those who still work at maintaining the company.
He further said the plant has a 110 mega power plant which will commence with the supply of 25 megawatts within the next two weeks.

Mr. Onobere, who said government also wants to ensure that the place is in a serviceable condition, also disclosed that government has not ceded any part of the plant to any of the investors.

Speaking on the Liquidation of NITEL /MTEL, Benjamin Dikki announced that the liquidator has effectively taken over, and a high powered delegation of the federal government will be heading for London soon to woo buyers for NITEL/ MTEL.

UPDATE: Pandemonium in Gwarimpa as villagers protest demolition of homes

Residents of Lungu Village in Adkan Estate, Gwarimpa, Abuja on Thursday went on a protest on the Kubwa Expressway, setting bonfires on the road as unsuspecting road users got stranded.

Some residents of the area who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria said they were protesting because of the demolition carried out by the Department of Development Control in the village.

Charles Oputa, Charlie Boy, a popular entertainer who resides in Gwarimpa, said that it was wrong for government to embark on the exercise without sensitising the villagers.

“If government wants to embark on this kind of exercise, there is the need to get the people psychologically prepared.

“You can see I have been pleading with them to stop the protests and open the roads to no avail; it is understandable because what happened today is very painful,’’ Charlie Boy said.

Sanni Geoffrey, a Gbagyi youth leader who was at the scene, said that the road would not be opened until the president came to address the injustice on his people.

“This injustice is too much; we will not leave here today until the president comes to address the injustice,” he said.

Another resident, Rose Galadima, lamented the alleged death of a child who died during the demolition.

“Now that they have killed the child, they should come and carry the corpse. What have we done to deserve this kind of treatment?” she lamented.

However, Kalu Emetu, Public Relations officer of the Development Control Department said that he was not aware of any deaths.

He said that the case with Lungu village had been in court for some months and judgment was recently delivered in favour of the Department.

He said that structures that were demolished in the exercise were illegal squatters and shanties.
“Squatter settlers encroached on Plot 64, Kafe District, in Lungu Village, which was meant for an estate.

“Development Control marked the area for demolition since March 2014 and the villagers went to court; the court finally struck out the case.

“Fifty four illegal structures, 17 shanties, 5 shops and one church were removed and I am not aware of any death,’’ he said
Yunusa Yusuf, the Secretary General, Abuja Original Inhabitants Association, in his reaction, said the protest became necessary to push for the rights of original indigenes.

Mr. Yusuf said that the inhabitants had continuously pleaded with the Federal Government to recognise their position as original inhabitants of the FCT.

“Overtime, we have seen that nobody is recognising us or appreciating the fact that we have sacrificed our ancestral land and everything for the benefit of everyone.

“We live among the rich but we are the poorest people; our children are not considered in any good schools and almost all our youths are jobless.

“They do not have any opportunity to benefit from various empowerment programmes,’’ he said.
Mr. Yusuf said that the indigenes had made several efforts to talk with the FCT Minister, Bala Muhammed, to assist them without success hence the protest.

He added that the protest would not be suspended until government intervened.

The protest created a heavy traffic on the busy road with vehicles stretching for several kilometres.
Commuters on the Abuja-Kubwa expressway lamented the gridlock that resulted from the protest, although it was later cleared by the protesters.

Baba Ahmed, a commuter, said that the incessant demolition exercise in the FCT was not in the interest of residents of the territory.

“I have been on this particular spot for the past two hours and am not sure of when the road will be opened.

“These are problems that could be averted if government is interested in dialoguing with the communities,’’ he said.

He called on relevant government authorities to ensure that dialogue was reached with communities to be demolished to avoid breach of peace in the territory.

Also, John Efere, the Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), said his office had no record of any casualty in the course of the demolition.

“We do not have record of any casualty; I believe the residents are just angered by the demolition.

“I just want to appeal to residents of the area to shun violence and embrace dialogue in the interest of peace,” Mr. Efere said.

87 Boko Haram suspects among 486 travellers arrested in Abia

About 87 of the over 486 travellers arrested in Abia State have been identified as members of the insurgent Boko Haram group, a security source has told PREMIUM TIMES.

The travellers were arrested on Monday in Aba, along Enugu – Port Harcourt Expressway, while travelling from Northern Nigeria to Port Harcourt in several buses.

The Director of Defence Information, Chris Olukolade, had, in a statement on Tuesday, said a wanted Boko Haram suspect was identified during the screening of those arrested. He, however, did not name the suspect.

Mr. Olukolade also stated that those identified as possible security risks or illegal immigrants would be separated from their colleagues for further action.

A top security source, however, told PREMIUM TIMES, Thursday, that apart from the one earlier identified, 86 others have been identified as suspected terrorists.

“But to be double sure, we have called for additional screening,” he said.

He confirmed that the suspects were all headed to Port Harcourt when they were arrested. He said that most of them, however, had never been to Port Harcourt before now and some did not even have up to N1,000 on them.

He stated that although no weapons were discovered on them, a certain kind of body marks associated with terrorists was noted on them.

He disclosed that the suspects were being held at 144 Battalion, close to Umuahia in Abia State although the confirmed kingpin has been moved to a different location.

He, however, refused to disclose the name of the confirmed kingpin, saying it could jeopardise investigations, as some persons linked to him might try to escape from the country if his name was mentioned.

“The kingpin is making very useful statements. Initially, he was trying to deceive the interrogators until he was confronted with fresh info,” the source said.

When PREMIUM TIMES approached Mr. Olukolade with the information from the reliable source, he declined comment.

“I cannot say anything now, the screening is still ongoing,” Mr. Olukolade, a Major General, said.
The arrest of the travellers was the first major one of suspected Boko Haram insurgents by security officials in eastern part of Nigeria.

The group, which has killed thousands of people since its insurgency began in 2009, has limited its activities to Northern Nigeria leading to the declaration of a State of Emergency in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa. The sect, however, recently threatened to attack other parts of the country.

219 chibok girls still missing

The Chairman of the Presidential Fact Finding Committee on the Chibok abduction, Gen. Ibrahim Sabo, on Friday maintained that 219 girls are still missing.

He gave the figure while presenting the report of the committee to President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House, Abuja.

According to him, while a total of 276 secondary school girls were abducted by Boko Haram on April 14, 57 of them escaped while 219 girls still remained unaccounted for.

Akpeyi tips Eagles to beat Bosnia

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, is confident the team will overcome Bosnia-Herzegovina Saturday’s group F clash at the ongoing FIFA World Cup Brazil.

The 2013 AFCON champions hopes to qualify from Group F ahead of the World Cup debutants.
The Eagles has one point from the barren draw against Iran, while Bosnia has zero point after going down to Argentina on Monday.

Akpeyi, who was left out of the final 23-man squad, said once the Nigerians step up their game, Bosnia and Argentina will not pose a hard nut for them to crack.

“It’s quite possible we qualify from the group going by the trend of results witnessed so far in the tournament.

“Most teams considered by bookmakers as favourites have crashed out already with more to follow in the days to come.

“So it’s quite possible for us to defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday. That will give us a total of four points and it may prove adequate to see us qualify, regardless of the outcome of the last group game against Argentina.

“However, the expected qualification won’t come on a platter of gold. We must work extremely hard to earn it, mostly against Bosnia.

“That’s why it’s incumbent on the Super Eagles’ players to step up their game and ensure they take their chances against Bosnia and Argentina.

“Both teams are beatable. There are several examples in the ongoing World Cup for us to draw inspiration from,” the Warri Wolves goalkeeper told supersport.com.

This follows from a statement issued on Thursday, June 19, by the police spokesperson Frank Mba. The measures are taken in order to "ensure a proper coordination of security operations and thus realizing a hitch-free election, devoid of electoral fraud", Mba said.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Abubakar has deployed the Assistant IGP Bala M Nasarawa and five commissioners of police (CPs) to supervise security arrangements. One of the CPs will be in charge of Ekiti State, three CPs will be specifically supervising security arrangements in Ekiti-North, Ekiti-Central and Ekiti-South senatorial districts, and another one will be overseeing the operations of the Police Mobile Force and other special Strike Forces.

According to the statement, movements in and out of Ekiti state will be banned 6pm Thursday till the elections are over. On the election day, movements will be restricted within the state between 6am to 8pm. Consequently, the neighbouring states of Kwara, Kogi, Ondo and Osun will have increased police presence with all entry and exit points in and out of Ekiti maximally policed.

Travelers are advised to use alternate routes. The restriction will not concern ambulance service providers, INEC officials, on-duty security men, accredited election monitors/observers, accredited journalists and other people on "essential duties".

"The order is informed by the need to forestall plans by criminal elements to undermine the electoral process as gathered through intelligence reports," Mba notes.

The police also urges all security details to desist from accompanying their principals to polling booths and collation centres on the election day. Only security personnel assigned for election duties must be seen within and around the election designated places, Mda added.

Police spokesperson appealed to Nigerians to see any inconveniences the order may cause "as a necessary sacrifice in the present circumstance geared towards the quest for a seamless, credible and successful gubernatorial election".
